Interview with Amelia from Her Guardian Angel and Giveaway

Interview with Amelia from Her Guardian Angel

Thank you Melissa for inviting me here today as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour, and in particular the Her Angel series section of it that celebrates the series and the release of the fourth book / first novel, Her Guardian Angel. It’s great to be back at Spellbound by Books!

I’ve already introduced the series and a little about the book at other blog stops on my tour, and I’ve interviewed the hero of Her Guardian Angel, Marcus, so now it’s time to sit down with the heroine, Amelia, and get her perspective on their story. But before I do that, I need to introduce myself to everyone who isn’t familiar with me.

My name is Felicity Heaton and I write paranormal romances and science fiction romances under than name, and also as F E Heaton. You might have seen me around this blog as I haunt it regularly. I’ve been writing since 2005, and turned indie in 2006. I mostly write vampires and werewolves, but have the odd shape-shifter, demon or witch in the mix, and of course, I write angels.

If you’re new to Her Guardian Angel, I’ll try to describe Amelia. She’s sitting across from me today on a very comfortable looking purple velvet armchair and she’s sporting a sleek black bob that I presume is a wig because that isn’t her normal hair colour. A pair of dark sunglasses hide her grey eyes from view and she’s head to toe in tight black clothing, which definitely isn’t like her. It’s more like Taylor, the heroine from Her Warrior Angel, and I have to wonder whether this is an attempt to remain incognito. She does have some powerful foes after her. Her smile is a little hesitant. She’s a woman who can handle herself but it seems she’s concerned about being away from Marcus, even though he’s only in the other room.

Since she looks nervous, I’ll get on with the interview.

FH: I have Amelia here with me today to talk about her book, Her Guardian Angel. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?

AMELIA: I certainly can. Telling readers about myself will probably be the easiest of the questions you’re going to make me answer. I can’t give away any juicy details about my story, can I? (shakes head) Shame. Okay, so a little about myself. I’m British, and was raised in a small countryside town, but I moved to London as soon as I could and started moving around jobs there. I had terrible luck with men before Marcus came along. Oh, I guess I probably still have terrible luck with men, since Marcus isn’t exactly a man. He’s an angel, literally. It was strange trying to compute that, but made a hell of a lot easier by the method I discovered that little fact about him. I’m in my early thirties and figured that I was probably going to coast through life and maybe find a good man and a good job and everything would get better for me. Well, it did, but I went through Hell to get there, and my job and my good man are nothing like I anticipated.

FH: Can you tell us about what happened in your story?

AMELIA: Without giving away too much, it will be difficult. I never suspected that Marcus was an angel, or that he had been watching over me my whole life, or that said life was going to get horribly like a nightmare. I’ve never believed in supernatural stuff, or gods and evil things like the Devil. It was a real eye opener when Marcus saved me from some demonic angels and I knew right then that my life would never be the same, but I could never have guessed just how much it was going to change. I don’t think I would be here today if it wasn’t for Marcus and his friends. I know that we had some rocky times, but the course of true love never did run smooth, right?

FH: Definitely right. How did you meet Marcus and how did you feel about him initially?

AMELIA: One day the guy next door was gone and Marcus was there. I thought my poor choice in men had driven him away with their late night visits to bang down my door and cuss at me. I passed the usual polite greetings with Marcus whenever we met in the hallway but he seemed so cold and detached. He didn’t speak to anyone in the building and broadcasted an air of “leave me alone” so I did just that. I didn’t really take much notice of him until the night that he punched Mike, my ex, who was doing his usual bang-the-door-down-at-3am routine. I couldn’t fail to notice Marcus then. The man is a god. Scratch angel. He’s a god. My sister would love him because he’s smart and sexy, two qualities she loves in a man. Once I really took Marcus in... I mean, he was only wearing jogging bottoms and looked incredibly sexy with his sleep-mussed unruly black hair... what sort of woman would I be if I didn’t ogle him? Where was I? Oh, yeah, once I took a moment to see Marcus properly for the first time, I was smitten. It was just a shame that he was still so distant. I tried my hardest to get him to open up, and eventually it worked. He’s a different person now. It almost feels as though I had imagined him as he was back then. He even laughs with his angel friends these days... well, when he isn’t training me until I’m close to passing out and giving me that sexy serious warrior look of his.

FH: Sounds as though Marcus has really done a 180! You should be proud of your achievement. It must have been difficult for you at first though. It’s not every day an angel walks into your life and saves you, and then reveals that you’re still in danger.

AMELIA: I think I was in shock at first, but it was hard to deny what I saw. Marcus in armour, albeit without wings, wielding two blades, and fighting against two black skinned immense demons to protect me. Once you’ve witnessed something like that, it’s sort of difficult to pretend you saw nothing and that none of it was real, just a figment of your imagination. When Marcus took me to see Einar, his angel friend, and Taylor, Einar’s half-demon woman, and I finally saw Marcus’s wings for the first time, I knew right then that as difficult as it was for me, I had to accept the reality that angels existed. I think I found it hardest to accept that it meant that God and the Devil were real too... although it didn’t take very long for me to believe that they were, and they weren’t as I had been led to believe. Marcus was so intent on protecting me, is still intent on it, that I couldn’t doubt him or anything he said, and realising that he’s an angel led me to an epiphany about him with the help of Einar. Once I knew more about Marcus, I knew that I wanted to be with him, regardless of the fact that he was an angel. I wanted to love him, and wanted to open his eyes to his feelings for me.

FH: How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?

AMELIA: It’s been really busy, although Marcus tries to find time for quiet moments together as well as perpetual training. I know how important it is to him that we’re ready to face whatever comes after us, and that an extra hour of training might mean the difference between survival and death for us both, so I don’t complain about it unless he’s worked me to the bone, and then I just snap! When he goes too far, he makes it up to me in the sweetest ways, and he’s been very good about making sure that the locations we move to are beautiful and peaceful, and places where I can snatch a few hours of bliss with him every so often. I like to think of it as a reward for my hard work. I’m sure if I started slacking off, the next place we moved to would be somewhere like Antarctica rather than small tropical islands. I know he chooses them because we’re harder to locate in such remote places, but sometimes I think he’s growing to like all that white sand and warm water regardless of what he says about it. It’s our little slice of paradise.

FH: Sounds like it, although it would be more like paradise without the hard training. Your story, Her Guardian Angel, is a book in the Her Angel series. Can you tell us a little about the series and can we expect see more of you in other stories in this series?

AMELIA: I think you can definitely expect to see more from me and Marcus in future stories in the series, as well as more of the other angels and their women too. I feel as though I should read the novellas you wrote about Apollyon and Serenity, Lukas and Annelie, and Einar and Taylor so I can learn more about them, and maybe get some dirt on them too. They have so much on me and Marcus that they’re merciless once they start teasing. It would be nice to have something in my arsenal to use on them. We’ve become very close since the events that happened in my story, almost like family, but they can’t replace my real family, and it’s my sister and dad that I’m worried about now.

FH: Describe yourself in one word?

AMELIA: Strong. Marcus tells me it all the time. He says he’s never met someone as strong as I am, and I guess I have to be in order to face everything that I have.

FH: Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

AMELIA: Only that I think everyone should rush out and get their hands on a copy of my story, Her Guardian Angel, so they can fall for Marcus in the way that I did... although, I have to say now ladies, he is mine, and I’ll be keeping him forever if I can.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this interview with Amelia and that it has intrigued you enough that you want to find out more about the series and the books, and that you’ll follow me on my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour so you can learn more about the characters, the series and the books, and participate in the giveaways. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

Vampire Venators Series by Felicity Heaton

Vampire Venators Series – The vampires

Firstly, I want to say thanks to Melissa for having me here again as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour and letting me share all my releases with you guys. My latest release, Forbidden Blood, is a vampire romance novel and the first in my new Vampire Venators romance series.

Here’s a little bit about me and this series. I’m a paranormal romance / sci-fi romance author writing as Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton, and I have penned over forty stories since I started writing in 2005. Most of those are still available, either for purchase as e-books and paperbacks or as a free download.

The Vampire Venators series is my second vampire romance series, the first being my ongoing Vampires Realm series that I write as F E Heaton. The world of the Vampire Venators series is complex. There are nine demon species living in either our world or in the demon realm, with a tenth species known as the Sovereignty that governs them. The Sovereignty are a group of nine beings, one for each species of demon, and they are the last of their kind. They’re ancient, powerful and mysterious, and were elected to govern the demon species by using Venators, hunters who are given power by the Sovereignty, to deal with any who break the law. Each species has its own hunters. The series focuses on the laws and Venators of the vampire species, but it will feature other demons in future stories.

Forbidden Blood is a dark romantic tale of love, betrayal and revenge, full of passion and action that will keep you turning the pages and panting for more, and is the first book in the series.

I’ve already spoken about eight of the demon species during my blog tour, and today I’ll be talking about the species at the centre of the series. The vampires.

The vampires in my Vampire Venators series are different from what you normally get in a vampire romance. They aren’t dead for a start, and there are three different types of vampire. All vampires share common abilities such as heightened senses and an aversion to sunlight, but each type of vampire has it at a different level. Vampires can breed, so their bloodline is literally their family. Their hearts beat, but at a rate far slower than our human ones do, and because of that they age more slowly. All vampires suffer the usual weaknesses such as death through decapitation and staking, much the same as a human would. They can be killed through blood loss and share the same weaknesses that we do. Enough damage to their bodies will kill them. They can also starve like we can.

The most powerful and elite of the vampires are the Nobles. Nobles have abilities beyond the grasp of those bloodlines beneath them. They’re extremely powerful, their heightened senses are second to none, and some of them inherit abilities such as telepathy and psychometry, etc, on top of their usual powers. Their normal powers allow them to tear someone apart without touching them, destroying them through thought, or turn on lights in their house, drive a car without needing to lay a hand on the steering wheel etc. There are vampires in the Noble bloodlines who inherit rare talents too. Nobles aren’t immune to sunlight, but can withstand all but the noonday sun if they have to, although most prefer to stick to night hours when moving around outside.

Second to the Nobles, are the Lesser Nobles. They’re weaker than the vampires of the Noble bloodlines, but they live alongside them, in families, and can also use powers and some of them have special abilities like the Nobles, although this is quite rare in the Lesser Noble lines. Because they’re weaker than the Nobles, they can’t tolerate the sun other than at dawn or dusk.

The Nobles rule over the Lesser Noble families, but they live in harmony, and many members of Lesser Noble bloodlines seek to marry into a Noble line to improve their status within vampire society. Both the Lesser Nobles and Nobles can turn humans through a single bite. Even a scratch from their fangs is enough to start the transformation process. No blood exchange or death required. Over the period of a few years, the human will gradually change and will become a vampire when their thirst awakens. Many Noble families look upon turning humans with disgust. They prefer to keep their bloodline pure, and some will even frown upon a Lesser Noble marrying into their family.

Noble and Lesser Noble bloodlines often have many different lines of their family living in the same house, and behaving in different ways. There is a ruling line for each house, and these are the titled vampires. The ruler of a Noble bloodline is the Duke or Duchess. The ruler of a Lesser Noble bloodline is the Earl or Countess. I won’t go into detail about their hierarchy now though. I’ll be writing an article about that at a later date in my blog tour. Other lines in a bloodline will act as servants or guards, or run businesses and live away from the family home. Only children of a ruling line can go on to rule the family upon their parents’ deaths. Not all Venators come from the ruling line. There are many bloodlines where the Venator line is one of the other families. Under those circumstances, the Venator line is allowed to live with the same freedom and respect, and benefits, that the ruling line has, as Venators are very respected amongst the Lesser Nobles and Nobles.

The third type of vampire is what the Noble and Lesser Noble families refer to as Commoners. Commoners are very different to them. They can’t tolerate sunlight at all and have no special abilities, so all they have is heightened senses and strength. Commoners require a blood-exchange and death to turn a human. They’re more like what we think of as a vampire. Lesser Nobles and Nobles don’t tend to interact with Commoners. There are no Venators amongst the Commoners because they don’t have the strength and powers required by the Sovereignty, and are deemed unworthy of the role. Venators from the Lesser Noble and Noble families can also carry out justice on a vampire from the Commoners line.

I hope this post has given you some insight into the vampires of my Vampire Venators series. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them as a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them. If you’re interested in the series, you can find details of the first book in the series, Forbidden Blood, below, and can also follow me on my blog tour by visiting my 2011 Blog Tour page on my website - http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk/paranormal-pandemonium-blog-tour.php

Crafting Cover Design With Magic by Felicity Heaton

Crafting Cover Design with Magic

By

Felicity Heaton

Firstly, I’d like to thank Melissa for inviting me to come to her blog as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour and talk about my books. I’m a paranormal romance author who mostly focuses on writing sexy vampires, dark angels, and deadly demons, but sometimes I tackle witchcraft too, and that’s what I’ve done with Ascension.

My latest novel, Ascension (Shadow and Light Trilogy book one) is about a sassy witch heroine, Lealandra, and her snarky half-demon ex-lover Taig. When Lealandra starts her ascension, a time when her magic reaches the pinnacle of its power and a process most witches don’t survive, she has to turn to her ex-lover and demon hunter Taig for help. Not only is she dealing with her ascension, but there’s also a dark force out to kill her, and Taig is her only hope. It’s a story of magic and intense action, but there’s also a deep emotional side that will touch readers as they watch the tentative relationship between the ex-lovers grow and share the endless passion that burns between them, and witness Taig’s struggle as he tries to accept his demon side.

I wanted to capture that magic and passion in the cover for the novel. See, I’m not only the author but the artist too. I’m professionally trained as a graphic designer and have been using Photoshop for more years than I care to admit, and I like nothing more than creating graphics and covers for my books. I love creating covers for my books because I feel I know the characters and story the most, and that helps me design a cover that really suits the book and will speak to readers, giving them a glimpse of the story before they even start reading.

With the cover of Ascension, I wanted something that reflected the intensity within its pages, the desire and magic, the heat and the danger. I had an initial idea that I just couldn’t create with stock photography and some Photoshop magic, but the cover that I eventually created was one that spoke to me more than the initial design idea. I used red and orange hues to represent the passion and the heat in the story, but also the danger, and brought in elements from the story such as the New York skyline, and the magical symbols. The magical markings really help tie the two halves of the book together and add that extra layer of witchiness about it, giving readers a clear indication of what the book is about.

Lealandra, the witch heroine, is represented in the lower half of the cover and in a way she appears in part of the book, with her hair swirling as though she’s underwater as the power of her magic pulses through her, threatening to take control. I decided to have her towering over the New York City skyline to add another level of danger to the cover, an indication that she’s powerful enough to be a danger to the city and could level it if her power gets out of control.

Taig, the half-demon half-human hero takes up the top half of the book, as dominant on the cover as he is in the book, with his demon wings on show. I loved putting wings on the stock picture of the man I had found as it really brought Taig to life on the cover. I wanted to keep them subtle. At the start of the story, Lealandra has never seen Taig’s demonic appearance and doesn’t know he has wings, so I wanted to keep that sort of mystery about him. Just a glimpse of the demon in him if readers look closely enough. The male model is perfect for Taig. Taig is burly and powerful, and I think the cover shows that.

The last thing I had to do with the cover was chose a font that really said magic to me, and brought the two halves of the design together. I’d had my eye on this font for a while, since I had designed another cover, and had written it down as the one to use on the cover for Ascension. It fits the book perfectly.

I’m still learning about creating covers but this is one that I’m particularly proud of and I wanted to share the meaning behind the cover and the reasons I chose specific elements.

If anyone has any questions about any of my covers, I’d be happy to answer them if you leave a comment on this blog post.

If you’re a reader looking for an action-packed, magical and passionate urban fantasy romance with a difference, then head on over to my website and check out the excerpt of Ascension: http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk

Ascension is available now in e-book format direct from my site, on Amazon Kindle, and other retailers, and is also available in paperback from Amazon.com

Ascension
Felicity Heaton
A witch on the verge of achieving phenomenal power, Lealandra must turn to her half-breed demon ex-lover Taig for protection from the dark force that is after her and also from her own magic.

With her Counter-Balance dead and her coven against her, Taig’s blood and power is the only thing that can help her control her magic and survive the ascension and gain the strength to defeat her enemy.

Old feelings come flooding back as Taig allows her into his world and Lealandra finds herself fighting not only for survival but to win his broken heart again and heal the pain in their past. Can he forgive her for walking out on him all those years ago and will he ever believe her when she tells him that he’s not a monster but the man that she loves?

Writing Romance by Felicity Heaton

Writing romance – possibly the best job in the world?

I’m Felicity Heaton, and I can’t think of any job in this world that is better than the one I have. What out there is more fun than spending your time creating worlds in which your imagination can run riot, crafting characters who become real in the minds of readers, and sharing experiences through a story with those readers? I can’t think of anything I want to do more than what I do now—writing romance novels.

I love the whole process, from the initial concept through to planning the story, plotting out all those twists and turns I like to weave into my books, to creating the characters and bringing them to life, giving them histories and the facets of personality that will make them shine on the page, and then editing the story until it shines too. There isn’t anything about writing romance that I don’t enjoy. Yes, I even love the effort it takes to promote my stories because it gives me a chance to connect with readers and speak to them about my books, and discover what they liked about them, and sometimes what they didn’t like. It’s all a huge learning process and I’m constantly evolving as a writer, growing with each book I pen or read.

I’ve been writing romance since 2005, when I was first e-published. I enjoyed being e-published but at the time I was doing most of the work, including creating my own covers, and when I started talking to an author friend about a change in the route I was taking, we quickly both decided to become indie authors. I’ve been indie since 2006, and while I have occasionally submitted stories to publishers and agents, I’ve been happy with my life as an indie. It gives me the freedom to write the stories that matter to me, at the lengths they deserve to be, rather than having to write for market. I have so many stories that I want to tell, and being indie means that I can get them out there sooner, connecting with more readers quicker than I could have if I had been traditionally published.

But that’s enough about my history, what I really wanted to talk about today was my love of writing. It’s a passion and an obsession, a force that drives me and never relents. I’m always working on something, whether it’s a first draft, plotting a new story, or editing, or even marketing. I’m constantly on the go, and constantly generating new ideas for characters or stories. I love writing romance because of the connections in the stories, the beauty of the first blossom of a relationship when it all begins and the big bang happens in our hearts, or the moment when lovers are reunited, overcoming their past to build a future together. Love is beautiful, and it’s something that humans crave to feel and experience, even when it’s through books. We can’t seem to put them down. My shelves are stacked with romances, from classic novels to modern paranormal romances and science fiction and fantasy. I write romance because I love to read romance. I like the warm feeling it gives me, and the smile it brings to my face, and how lost I can become in a good romance story. It’s that which I want to give my readers. I want to give to them what I have received from so many other authors—an escape into a world packed with romance and action that brings me a big smile of satisfaction and happiness at the end of it.

I write paranormal romances and science fiction romances, two genres that I have adored since I was a young child. I have book reports written as a six year old where I’m only ever satisfied if the characters in the story were scary—vampires, witches, werewolves or Frankenstein’s monster—if they weren’t paranormal, I declared the book was boring. I have tried my hand at contemporary, historical, and romantic suspense, but it makes sense to me that I write what I love to read, and that means there has to be a supernatural or futuristic element to the story.

Because I’m an indie author, my stories can vary in length, from a 10,000 word short story to a 160,000 word novel. That’s around the equivalent of a 550 page mass-market paperback. I tend to mix and match between writing stand alone stories and series, but love to write series most of all as that’s where I can really flex my world-building muscles and can have more fun with characters. I have two series of science fiction romance short stories and novellas, an ongoing paranormal angel romance series, a duo of sexy black panther shape-shifter novels, and an ongoing vampire romance series too, amongst others.

I don’t write the goody-two-shoes vampires and werewolves, those that won’t touch a drop of blood unless it’s animal or synthetic. I write dark paranormal romances where the characters aren’t ashamed or afraid to act as nature intended, but they are balanced, and feel as much as humans do. It’s a fine line to tread, but I think it adds excitement to the story, and a sense of realism, or as close to one as you can get in a paranormal story. If you’re looking for dangerous heroes or even anti-heroes, then I write them in spades, each as dark as the next, and each with a hint or a hefty dose of bad-boy appeal. I write realistic heroines who have their moments of fear, but can kick ass when required and aren’t afraid to go out there and get what they want, which is usually the hero.

This year, I’ll be releasing eleven stories in total, three of them free reads, and they’ll all be paranormal romances. There’ll be dark angels, sexy vampires, drop-dead gorgeous werewolves, and even a hellcat. So, if you’re looking for a new paranormal romance or science fiction romance author to sink your teeth into, why not check out my website? I love to interact with readers too, so you can always get in touch with me on Twitter and Facebook, or through my blog or website.
