Waiting on Wednesday (157)

Waiting On Wednesday was created by Jill over at Breaking The Spine. It's a weekly post for you to share what upcoming books you can't wait for!

I used to read alot from Karin Slaughter and Tess Gerritsen back in the day.  I guess I needed a change of scene for a little while as all the crime in their books sometimes actually gave me nightmares lol.  The books were that good!  But I'm itching to get my hands on Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter which is out in September this year.

Synopsis

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.
More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia's teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed.
The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.
Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful thriller from one of the finest suspense writers working today.

The Revenge of Seven by Pittacus Lore

Author: Pittacus Lore
Genre:  Young Adult/Sci Fi
Publisher:  Penguin Australia
Publication Date: 26th August 2014
ISBN:  9780718178369
Stand Alone/Series:  Lorien Legacies #5
Pages:  320 pages
First Lines:  The nightmare is over.  When I open my eyes there's nothing but darkness.

Synopsis:
The have killed four of us.
They will not rest until we are all dead.
They will not stop until your planet is theirs.
 They think we are broken.
 We will not be defeated.
We are all that stands in their way.
We know secrets they thought hidden.
We have power they never expected.
The time has come for them to fall. The Garde have suffered the ultimate betrayal: Number Five has allied himself with the Mogadorians, killing Eight and helping the Mogs to abduct Ella from the safe house. Now the fight for Earth's survival has just become that much more impossible. The Garde may not have time to mourn their fallen ally, but they'll make sure to avenge him. And help is at hand from the most unlikely of sources: Adam, a Mogadorian, has turned his back on his people. He might just be their lifeline, but are the Garde repeating past mistakes by putting their trust in him?

My Thoughts:  I received this book a little while ago, but because I'm one of these readers that wants... no NEEDS to read things in order, I picked up Fall of Five first. Once I'd finished that I was so glad I had The Revenge of Seven to keep gong because seriously things couldn't be left as they were.

It's worse after reading this book because I now have to wait HOW LONG to find out what is going to happen after this crazy as cliffhanger.  Like seriously!!

So,  The Revenge of Seven for me wasn't gripping enough to be read in one sitting.  It was good don't get me wrong.  But I found myself putting the book down alot in the beginning.  It wasn't that it WASN'T good.  I just wasn't compelled to fly through this like some books.  But in saying that I still thoroughly enjoyed the read.  I couldn't help but feel like this was just setting things up more or less for book 6 because apart from a few smallish revelations which threw a few curve balls at the reader, there was no "Oh my God" moments up until the VERY end and then it was like. No don't end on THAT! But obviously it did!

The garde split up a few times during the book having each group heading in different directions.  They are left to deal with less than ideal circumstances and I must admit I was on the edge of my seat just as something big was going down only to have the Author switch to another character!

There was one really surprising element in the form of Adam.  Of course this is all I will say but deep down I was cheering for him a bit.  Another surprising thing were the amount of Chimaerae (or however it is spelt) in this.  Finally Bernie Kosar is not completely alone!

There was a funny moment in the book that has stuck with me even now after finishing this off, and that one of the chimaera goes from being a canary to a rhino midflight.  Amusing to say the least.  I'd love to see this done in cinema, but alas I shall keep wishing.

There are a few things that are revealed in this book as well.  Obviously you will have to find these out for yourselves!  I'm surprised to find when Six and gang reach their destination and find out the outcome of their mission.

Once hitting the halfway mark I couldn't put the book down.  I needed to know what was going to happen to John, Marina (Seven) and the gang and by the last page I was trying to magically manifest the next book along unsuccessfully.

If you have been reading the Lorien Legacies series don't stop reading this book because there are a few slow spots because at the end you are going to be wishing that the next book was right there in front of you!

Book received from:  Penguin Australia for review.

The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey

Title:  The Fifth Wave
Author:  Rick Yancey
Genre:  Young Adult/Sci-fi/Thriller
Publisher:  Penguin
Publication Date:  7th May 2013
ISBN:  9780141345819
Stand alone or series:   Book 1 in the Fifth Wave series
Pages:  480 pages
Book Received from:  Penguin (Publisher)
First Lines:  There will be no awakening. The sleeping woman will feel nothing the next morning, only a vague sense of unease and the unshakable feeling that someone is watching her.  Her anxiety will fade in less than a day and will soon be forgotten.

Synopsis:

The 1st Wave Took out half a million people.
The 2nd Wave Put that number to shame.
The 3rd Wave Lasted a little longer. Twelve weeks . . . Four billion dead.
In the 4th Wave , You can't trust that people are still people.
And the 5th Wave? No one knows. But it's coming.
On a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs. Runs from the beings that only look human, who have scattered Earth's last survivors.
To stay alone is to stay alive, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan may be her only hope.
Now Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death.

My Thoughts:
This has got to be one of the best books I've read in 2013.  After reading the synopsis of this I had no idea what I was going to expect when I started reading it! And once I finished it, I wished I could have read it in one sitting because it is seriously that good!  The suspense to pick it up while I worked was just about killing me.  I needed to know what Cassie was going to do. How Sam was, and how Zombie was coping.

The very first part drew me in with the narrative.  Eerie and to the point.  We are then introduced to Cassiopeia ("Cassie") the main character of the novel. She's a strong character and one I grew to admire!  She's alone in the woods trying to survive the beings that have landed on earth.

What I liked most about this book was that it didn't start at the first wave but began just before the fifth wave.  So Cassie goes back over what happened in the last four as well as what has happened to her family.  It kept me hanging on every word of her POV.

Admittedly, once I got to Wonderland the narrative threw me.  I wasn't expecting another character to take over and had to read it a couple of times when he referred to his sibling as Sissy and not Sam and then it clicked, POV change.  God sometimes I feel slow.  The narrative swaps between Cassie, Zombie, and a random chapter of one of the "Others", and Sam so we all get an overall feel of what is going on, not just being stuck in just the two POV's.

Along the way Cassie meets the elusive Evan Walker.  Strange and caring Cassie breaks her two rules: Trust Noone and the only way to stay alive as long as possible is to stay alone as long as Possible.  Csssie's promise to Sam weighs heavy on her shoulders though and as soon as she's able to she will find him.  Whatever it takes

The Fifth Wave is one of those read-all-at-once books.  Once you pick it up, you'll be gripping the book as hard as it's grip is on you to finish.  It's exciting and scary and has you wondering who you can trust when you can't tell the difference between friends and the enemy.  For YA Sci-Fi this has got to be up there with the best!  Bring on book 2!

And just to share with you all, the film rights have already been sold.  I cannot wait!!

Pulling Down the Stars by James Laidler

Author:  James Laidler
Genre:  Contemporary Australian Thriller
Publisher:  Hybrid Publishers
Publication Date:  1st February 2013
ISBN:  9781921665820
Stand alone or series:   Stand Alone
Pages:  376 pages
Book Received from:  Author (Advance Reader Copy)
First Lines:  Charlie stood in the hallway of the family home facing his grandpa's bedroom door.

Synopsis: Charlie Lansdowne’s life is going nowhere ... fast. Trapped at home with his eccentric father and his stroke-affected grandfather, he finds life a daily exercise in dysfunction as three generations of men strive to get along. But when Charlie meets the volatile and tempestuous Maxine – a surfer girl who works at the local abattoir – his life goes supernova. Friendships implode, passions ignite and death comes stalking in the night. Set in the seaside country town of Warrnambool, this is a contemporary Australian thriller likened to 'Jasper Jones'

My Thoughts:
Pulling Down the Stars is very different from the first novel The Taste of Apple which was written in verse.  But in saying that this was just as good, if not better.  Pulling Down the Stars is told from mainly Charlie and Maxine's POV, but we also get's snippets from Bill, a very unstable and scary Serial Killer, which only adds mystery to the overall story.

Chapter one really does hit you in the face.  Charlie is attending to his Grandfather who has suffered a stroke and is very dependant on his son and grandson.  One thing I'll say.  Nothing gets any more real then this first chapter.

We are then introduced to Maxine.  Her chapters start out short and to be quite honest, even reading the beginning of hers you know she is going to prove to be one tough little character.  I do love how the book has Maxine's POV as first person but Charlie and Bill's as third.  Maxine is at times a difficult character to like but bringing it in to first person really helps get inside her head more.  Well that's how I feel.  Mind you, by the end of the book I loved all the characters involved, including the less likable ones.

I also love how James has broken up the chapters with subtitles under each.  It breaks up the text and makes it easier to read and go back and find things that have really stuck with me.

His writing is real, confident and drips with Aussie culture.  Another thing I love!  Reading this is like sitting down with mates and having a convo.  I really felt like I got to know each character and understood them right to the core.

James also shows a real knowledge when it comes to the character's jobs.  Both the hospital and abattoir jobs, I could really picture those characters carrying out their work and with the description it makes the whole scenes within the book really come alive.

The story itself is both kind of harsh and heartfelt.  Charlie and Maxine have a lot to deal with but they really do shine towards the end of the book.  I can't forget Roger.  For someone with nearly full time responsibility for his Father-in-Law, he shows a saint's amount of patience and has proven to be a wise and down to earth character.  And Bill,  well a bit of a nut job lol but he plays his part in the book!

I do recommend reading this book.  While chapter one for me was a little difficult, stick with it because it is an awesome story.  And I mean come on, how can you go past the title.  Pulling Down the Stars!

Fave Line:   -  I completely loved the songs and creativity from Charlie's music!

Synopsis

But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.
