Book Trailer: Booke of the Hidden by Jeri Westerson

Booke of the HiddenSynopsis
After a relationship gone bad in California, Kylie Strange moves to rural Maine for a fresh start. But she gets more than she bargained for when she finds a supernatural book bricked into the wall of her new tea shop, Strange Herbs and Teas. As soon as she opens the Booke of the Hidden, the quiet town of Moody Bog suddenly becomes a lot more interesting.

First the mysterious and handsome Erasmus Dark shows up unannounced, claiming to be a demon and warning Kylie of untold destruction. She waves him off, until a museum proprietor turns up dead, and the sheriff targets Kylie as a suspect. With the help of Erasmus and a ragtag group of local Wiccans, Kylie unravels the Booke's secrets, and they begin to believe the culprit is someone--or something--much more sinister than a run-of-the mill human murderer.
Award-winning author Jeri Westerson crafts a tale of magic, murder, and romance, drawing us into the mystical world that surrounds Strange Herbs and Teas.

This does certainly look like the beginnings of an interesting series.  I'm looking forward to picking this book up!

TV Shows Based on Books: Midnight Series

This >has got to be one of those stories that I have been itching to see made into a movie or tv show, and as luck would have it, we get to see this happen.  If you haven't read the stories, I suggest picking up Midnight Crossroad and go from there.  I loved the Sookie Stackhouse series and Midnight has not disappointed either.  I expect the show to be just as amazing as Trueblood.

Midnight Crossroad (Midnight, Texas #1)Day Shift (Midnight Texas, #2)Night Shift (Midnight, Texas, #3)

I could not find out when we can expect this to air on tv but if anyone knows, feel free to add in the comments below.

Day Shift by Charlaine Harris

Title: Day Shift
Author: Charlaine Harris
Genre: Paranormal / Fantasy
Publisher: Gollancz
Publication Date: 5th May 2015
ISBN: 9780575092891
Stand Alone/Series: Midnight Texas#2
Pages: 320 pages
First Lines: It isn't the rumbling of the trucks that seizes Manfred Bernardo's attention; it is the silence that falls when their ignitions die.

Contains Possible Spoilers if you haven't read Midnight!
Synopsis:
There is no such thing as bad publicity, except in Midnight, Texas, where the residents like to keep to themselves. Even in a town full of secretive people, Olivia Charity is an enigma. She lives with the vampire Lemuel, but no one knows what she does; they only know that she’s beautiful and dangerous.

Psychic Manfred Bernardo finds out just how dangerous when he goes on a working weekend to Dallas and sees Olivia there with a couple who are both found dead the next day. To make matters worse, one of Manfred’s regular—and very wealthy—clients dies during a reading.

Manfred returns from Dallas embroiled in scandal and hounded by the press. He turns to Olivia for help; somehow he knows that the mysterious Olivia can get things back to normal. As normal as things get in Midnight…

My Thoughts:
Day Shift is the second book in Charlaine Harris' new series Midnight, Texas.  I thoroughly enjoyed Charlaine's Sookie Stackhouse series and the Midnight series does not disappoint!

The series begins with Manfred Bernardo a psychic, moving to Midnight, Texas.  There he finds and unusual close-nit group of residents with their own closet of secrets.

I found Day Shift jumped into the action a little quicker than Midnight, and it certainly hooked me from the first chapter.  An unusual event occurs in Midnight and it has the residents on edge.  A mysterious company has resurrected the boarded up hotel and it is bringing traffic to Midnight.  Not something that they want at all.

Another mysterious guest appears roughly the same time as the opening of the hotel and takes up temporary residence in the Rev's chapel.  What really gets the story going, is when he is out on a working weekend to Dallas and a long standing client of his dies.  Which sets the dominoes falling.

I really enjoyed the secrecy of each character.  I won't give up any secrets there but there were a few surprises amongst the group and I am curious to see where  Charlaine takes this in the third book.

Manfred as usual is the favourite for me but in these novels Charlaine has given multiple viewpoints told in third person omniscient, which could get confusing if you read too fast.  There were a couple of times I had to reread a paragraph to pick up who was telling this particular part of the story.

I loved how Charlaine makes reference to characters from her other books in this series, including one character that I know of that shows up in the Sookie Stackhouse novels.  If you know those books you have a fair idea of this particular person's skills and background.  Another nice tie in I think!

All in all I love Charlaine Harris' writing style and her stories! I'm definitely going to look into the other series she has created for my next lot of reading material.  I just can't wait for Night Shift to be published.

Review: Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Title:  Dangerous Creatures
Author: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Genre:  Young Adult/Urban Fantasy/Paranormal
Publisher:  Penguin
Publication Date:  20th May 2014
ISBN:  9780141354101
Stand Alone/Series:  Dangerous Creatures #1
Pages:  Enter
First Lines:  There are only two kinds of Mortals in the backwater town of Gatlin, South Carolina - the stupid and the stuck.  At least, that's what they say.

Synopsis:  Ridley Duchannes is nobody's heroine.
She's a dark Caster, a Siren.  She can make you do anything.  She can't be trusted. By Anyone.
But that hasn't stopped her boyfriend Link from falling in love with her - or taking her with him to follow his rock-star dream.
New York City is a dangerous place for both Casters and Mortals, and soon Ridley realizes that Link's bandmates are keeping secrets.
Determined to uncover the truth, what she finds out is worse than she could have imagined.
Link has a price on his head that no Caster or Mortal can ever pay.
With lives on the line, what's a Siren to do?

My Thoughts:  I absolutely loved the Caster Chronicles  and hadn't realized that there was going to be a spin off with Ridley and Link until Penguin sent me a package in the mail.

I was a bit skeptical to begin with because I got to about page 15 and wasn't really into this as much as I'd hoped to be.  I just wasn't really warming up to Ridley like I had with the characters of Beautiful Creatures.  I guess I was hoping to find that bit of Lena within her and I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed.

But I'm glad I kept reading because once I hit page 24 and then to 112, the tables had turned and I thought wow!  Ridley, I could get used to this. The run in with Link's mother before they leave had me thinking I could get used to Ridley's attitude, but what really did it for me was the part with Ridley in the Hair Salon.  I'd been hooked.

Ridley didn't really stand out for me in the Caster Chronicles but I'm happy that she's been given her own series with Link.  She's attitude, doesn't deal with anyone's crap and surprisingly deep, deep, down there is a soft side to her.  Paired with Link, it makes for an interesting duo.  Link isn't the brightest spark, but he's genuine, head over for heels for Ridley, and terrible band member with his lyrics.

If you've read the Caster Chronicles, you'll more than likely enjoy this spin off series!  I recommend to read the Caster Chronicles first, it will give you a better understanding of the family but it is not necessary!

Fave Lines:  When it came to relationships, the truth never set anyone free.  The Truth only set things on fire. - page 95.

Disharmony: Immortal Combat by Leah Giarratano

Title:  Disharmony: Immortal Combat
Author:  Leah Giarratano
Genre:  Young Adult/ Paranormal/ Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Penguin Australia
Publication Date:  21st August 2013
ISBN:  9780143565703
Stand Alone/Series:  Disharmony #3
Pages:  384 pages
First Lines:  No matter how desperately she dug her heels into the sun-baked clay of the Voodoo Queen's backyard, Betsy Washington closer.

Synopsis:
A war that will end the world or save it . . .
The prophesied war is raging. Luke's destiny is unstoppable, Sam's losses and powers are unravelling her mind, and Jake's family secrets put the whole world in peril. And that's before the darkest warlock of all time makes his first move on the chessboard. A move he's planned for centuries . . .

My Thoughts:
Immortal Combat is the last book in the Disharmony Trilogy and while I looked forward to seeing how Leah tied up the end of this series I was kind of disappointed by the ending.

I liked how she has progressed Luke, Jake and Sam's powers up to what they are and I was looking at Immortal Combat being the ultimate awesome finish but I guess it lacked the POW! that a final book should have at the final crucial moment.  It just didn't capture me.

We find out more of what each character can do in this book and seen what happens when powers emerge when each main character is not quite ready for it.  We are also introduced to the final players in the game that we have only heard snippets of in the previous two books.

I couldn't help but cheer Luke on in this novel.  He always seems to be the underdog and being the "Psychopath" doesn't always give him a good Rep!  I also loved the interactions between Luke and his sister Arabella who was a failed psychopath.  They stood out against the rest of the group but somehow I kept thinking Arabella might have played the psychopath better than Luke but I favoured him ultimately.

I would like to see more of Leah Giarratano's work as she has got some really awesome writing I just

The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

Author:  Richelle Mead
Genre:  Young Adult/Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Penguin (Imprint: Razorbill)
Publication Date:  12th February 2013
ISBN:  9781921518911
Stand alone or series:   Bloodlines #3
Pages:  416 pages
Book Received from:  Penguin (Publisher)
First Lines:  This wasn't the first time I'd been pulled out of bed for a crucial mission.  It was, however, the first time I'd been subjected to such a personal line of questioning.

Synopsis:
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

My Thoughts:
I've been waiting for Sydney to finally step up and embrace her magic and thank god she does in The Indigo Spell.  After the ending in the Golden Lily I was hanging desperately on getting to read the next book along and it does not disappoint at all.

Sydney, who is so in control of her life and follows the rules to a T finally crosses the line and starts doubting the things that she's been taught and told by the Alchemists.

I like the fact that there are two running stories within The Indigo Spell.  There's the main one where Sydney does all she can to protect Jill and then there is her determination to find Marcus Finch as well as help Ms Terwilliger in finding the magical user targeting young girls with the potential for magic.  It makes Sydney embrace her own magic more the deeper she gets involved.

Adrian, sigh.  Adrian is as sweet as ever.  I think if I ever were to have a character crush on any of the many characters I've read over this year it has got to be him.  He's the polar opposite of what Sydney is and at the same time they solve problems together really well.

Things get alot more interesting as the series progresses and I am counting down the days until the Fiery Heart makes it on shelves.  And talk about throwing a spanner in the works at the end of this.  Trust me you will want to get your hands on this!

Fall of Night by Rachel Caine

Title:  Fall of Night
Author:  Rachel Caine
Genre:  Young Adult/Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Penguin (Imprint: Razorbill)
Publication Date:  24th April 2013
ISBN:  9781921880230
Stand alone or series:   #14 Morganville Vampires
Pages:  443 pages
Book Received from:  Penguin (Publisher)
First Lines:  The billboard at the edge of the border of Morganville hadn't changed since Claire had first driven past it on the way into town at the tender age of sixteen.

Synopsis:Claire never thought she'd leave Morganville, but when she gets accepted into the graduate program at MIT, she can't pass up the opportunity. Saying goodbye to her friends is bittersweet, especially since things are still raw and unsettled between Claire and her boyfriend, Shane.
Her new life at MIT is scary and exciting, but Morganville is never really far from Claire's mind. Enrolled in a special advanced study program with Professor Irene Anderson, a former Morganville native, Claire is able to work on her machine, which is designed to cancel the mental abilities of vampires.
But when she begins testing her machine on live subjects, things quickly spiral out of control, and Claire starts to wonder whether leaving Morganville was the last mistake she'll ever make.

My Thoughts:
Admittedly I worried about this book.  I loved the characters in Morganville so much that when I had read the synopsis I thought that maybe this book wouldn't live up to my expectations that had been met from the previous books.  I shouldn't have doubted Rachel Caine as an author because this was AWESOME!!

Claire moves away from her friends and into an apartment with her old best friend Elizabeth who she works out early on isn't the most ideal place to be.  But leaving Morganville behind has its pros and cons.  Claire gets to start fresh and finally go to MIT and do what she loves doing, the downside is leaving everyone she cares about back in Morganville.  I'm a bit sad at that but she talks to Eve, Michael and Shane enough for them to be included in the novel until they actually appear, which I was super happy about.

The book takes quite an interesting turn when Claire is informed that Myrnin is coming to town and with that brings a whole lot more action and dramas including Eve, Michael and Shane.  I am surprised with one thing about this book.  In previous books we had various POV's but this time though it is just Claire and Shane.  Shane has reigned it in a little too but the one thing I've noticed with him is that he may play well in one book but pulls all the stops and causes havoc in the next so I'm wondering what sort of trouble him and his friends will get into Daybreakers.  Because the next book is going to go off with a bang I believe!

As per usual Rachel Caine does not disappoint when it comes to action and keeping me reeled in.  I read this book in one day because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!  We are also introduced to new characters which I'm curious to see how it all goes in Daylighters, book 15 in the series.

I know I shouldn't bring this up but OMG the ending!  It's a killer!  And certainly not at all what I was expecting to happen at all.  So you can imagine how long and painful the wait will be until I get my hands on the next instalment in the Morganville Vampire series but like always it is totally worth it.

Am still wondering how many books in the Morganville series there will be.  Keep 'em coming, is all I have to say.

Disharmony: The Laeduin by Leah Giarratano

Author:  Leah Giarratano
Genre:  Young Adult/Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Penguin
Publication Date:  30th January 2013
ISBN:  9780143565697
Stand alone or series:   Disharmony #2
Pages:  344 pages
Book Received from:  Penguin Australia
First Lines:  I don't even know whether you guys are receiving these messages.  I just have to hope that you are - well, I guess we all do - because the volume control has been ramped up on the freakometer, and Luke, Samantha and Jake are in for a hell of a ride.

Possible spoilers if you haven't read the first book!

Synopsis:

The psychopath, the empath and the genius are finally together – and not everyone is happy about their reunion. As their powers grow stronger they are forced to seek out an unexpected ally. But as war between the worlds threatens to erupt, it becomes apparent that no one can be trusted . . . not even family.
The second book in this gripping new series about a collision of worlds, the power of destiny, and the darkness in us all

My Thoughts:
When I picked up The Laeduin I didn't realize it was going to be a bit of a struggle to pick up where The Telling left off.  It wasn't until Samantha mentions her family back at home when things started to click into place.

Finally the three siblings are together and not everybody is happy with this arrangement.  Outside forces do everything in their power to break them apart and send them towards their mother and since she is not able to approach them directly, she finds other ways to make this happen.

My pet peeves have to be the chapters with Intellicide and another character.  We don't really get given much in the way of who this person is and apart from summing up what's happening so far I don't see how this ties in.  I mean except for where his whereabouts and possible identity come out towards the end I found that he/she was a little annoying in interrupting the story.  I am sure the Authors has plans for this other person and they will reveal themselves in the next book but right now I don't see how his/her involvement helps.

The other character which I will keep quiet about the identity pops up roughly 3/4 through the book and really threw me off.  I felt like the very first chapter from them took away a little from the story.  It's not until I kept reading that I worked out why they were there but I think it would have helped if that was introduced further back and not shoved in so far down the story.  Again these are my thoughts.

In saying that I really did enjoy the rest of the story.  I felt for Luke big time.  He seems to be on the outer when it comes to fitting in.  Samantha and Jake have no probs with blending in with other groups so when Luke was on the outer I felt like I favoured his POV more as a character.

I love the way the world is set up with the portals and other creatures and finding out that some of these creatures have been hidden in plain sight made me want to find out the reasoning they would go out of their way to help humans, a species their kind despises.

This was a great read and although I had a few gripes I look forward to reading what happens in the next book.  Because that's one thing I have to save for this series so far, you can't predict what's going to happen next.  Which is a big thumbs up for me!!

The Skeleton Key by Tara Moss

Title:  The Skeleton Key
Author:  Tara Moss
Genre:  Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Romance
Publisher:  Pan Macmillan
Publication Date:  1 December 2012
ISBN:  9781742611631
Stand alone or series:   Pandora English #3
Pages:  304
Book Received from:  Pan Macmillan
First Lines:  It was near the end of the working day as I cast an uneasy glance at my watch and then at the empty office behind me.

Synopsis:
By day Pandora English is a lowly fashion assistant. By night, she is a supernatural scion.
The Crow Moon is rising and Pandora has a date with Civil War soldier Lieutenant Luke, who will be flesh-and-blood for one night only. When Lieutenant Luke disappears, Pandora must unlock the mysteries of Number One Addams Avenue with her skeleton key and discover the secrets that lie in the forgotten laboratory of Dr Edmund Barrett.

For Pandora has been warned: a powerful force is in the house. As Friday the Thirteenth looms, Pandora English and the citizens of Spektor are in grave danger. For the dead will rise and terror shall reign.

My Thoughts:
I try to make it a habit to never read out of a series.  I don't know whether that is just an OCD I had or what.  But this time I made a point of reading this as I had this sent from the publishers and I was surprised at how quick I picked up on stuff that happened in the previous books.  I'm sure it's not like that for all books but yeah.

I was pretty hooked right from the get go.  This was definitely one of those books I really had trouble putting down.  I was pretty surprised how much I loved the secondary character Lieutenant Luke.  I warmed to him straight away.

Another thing I liked about the actual book is that each Chapter is decorated with a fancy design making it easier to see how far I was from the next chapter.

While I must say I'm a tad bit over Paranormal romances for the moment I really enjoyed this one.  How could I not with such fantastic characters.

Another thing I absolutely loved was the counting OCD brand new vampires have.  Pandora carries a handful of rice for just this sort of occasion and I just about cracked up laughing when she used this to get past them.  The book overall has that kind of humour all throughout it and I found it made the book so much easier to fly through because I was enjoying every part.  The spooky bits tended to stick out just that little bit more and I think it made for a well balanced book.

If you're looking for an interesting but light book to read I suggest you give this a try.  It didn't really feel like a third book in the series for me but I tend to recommend reading the beginning of a series before jumping in.  But in saying that I don't think this really is the case for this book.  Hope you all enjoy!

The Farm by Emily McKay

Title:  The Farm
Author:  Emily McKay
Genre:  Young Adult/Dystopian/
Publisher:  Penguin Australia
Publication Date:  21st November 2012
ISBN:  9781405909259
Stand alone or series:   Stand Alone??
Pages:  424 pages
Book Received from:  Penguin (Publisher)
First Lines:  Sometimes you just want to let the bad guys win.

Synopsis:
For Lily and her twin sister, Mel, there is only the Farm . . .

It's a prison, a blood bank, a death camp - where fear and paranoia rule. But it's also home, of sorts. Because beyond the electric fence awaits a fate much, much worse.

But Lily has a plan.

She and Mel are going to escape - into the ravaged land outside, a place of freedom and chaos and horrors. Except Lily hasn't reckoned on two things: first, her sister's ability to control the horrors; and, secondly, on those out there who desperately want to find and control Mel.

Mel's growing power might save the world, or utterly end it. But only Lily can protect Mel from what is to come . . .

My Thoughts:
I'm not sure whether this one will have a sequel or not but after the ending that we are left with.  I sure hope it does.

The story follows two girls Lily and her autistic twin Mel who are doing their best to survive and escape The Farm.  What I like about this to begin with is that we have three POV's happening.  Lily, Mel and Carter, a boy who shows up on the farm that the girls new from The Before who may not be as genuine as he tries to make out.

I must say I really enjoyed reading the short chapters from Mel's POV.  She's so switched on with what's happening but just doesn't know how to communicate with Lily her overprotective sister.

And I have to point this out, because the synopsis does NOT mention this word at all when summing up the story.  There are vampires.  Two types.  The ticks which are animalistic, hairy, scary vampires that hang outside the farm and the other which could pass for normal people apart from the cold, predatory nature they  portray.  Which now that I think about, are worse than the ticks.

For those of you that have had enough of the vampire genre, I suggest you give this a try.  Its a different take on the whole vampire scene and one I think you'd find worthwhile.  I just hope that we get to see a second book to find out what happens next!

Bitter Blood by Rachel Caine

Title:  Bitter Blood
Author:  Rachel Caine
Genre:  Young Adult/Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Penguin Australia
Publication Date:  24th October 2012
ISBN:  9781921880186
Stand alone or series:   Morganville Vampires #13
Pages:  540
Book Received from:  Publisher (Penguin)
First Lines:  Claire Danvers was in a really bad mood, and getting nearly arrested didn't improve it.

Possible Spoilers if you haven't read the previous books!

Synopsis:The brand-new Morganville Vampires novel from bestselling author Rachel Caine . . .
Thanks to the eradication of the parasitic creatures known as the draug, the vampires of Morganville have been freed of their usual constraints. With the vampires indulging their every whim, the town’s human population is determined to hold on to their lives by taking up arms. But college student Claire Danvers isn’t about to take sides, considering she has ties to both the humans and the vampires.
To make matters worse, a television show comes to Morganville looking for ghosts, just as vampire and human politics collide. Now, Claire and her friends have to figure out how to keep the peace without ending up on the nightly news… or worse.

My Thoughts:
This is the one series I think I could just read forever!

I'm completely loving the multiple view points that Rachel has going in the Morganville Vampires series.  This time we have Claire, Shane, Eve, Michael, and glimpses of Myrnin, Amelie and Oliver.  I don't know where to start!  I especially loved reading Myrnin's POV since I think he's got to be my favourite character.

Without revealing too much, Morganville is in a bit of a pickle.  Amelie and Oliver promised that the rules of Morganville will change but unfortunately it's not for the better.  It's gotten alot worse and smack bang in the middle are Clare, Shane, Eve and Michael.  Not a good place to be.

There is so much that I want to talk about but I'm worried I will spoil things for everyone else.  All I can say is that both relationships face another really hard obstacle.  There are quite a few OMG did he just do that!  moments as well as some characters whose actions are not at all surprising but I must say that the ending is not something I would have thought would happen.

If you've read the previous books this is one you do not want to miss!  Rachel continues to bring out the best and worst in Morganville and wraps it all up with loads of action and life changing choices.  I'm rather shocked at the ending of this one and am already itching to get a hold of the next book.  Keep a look out for Fall of Night, book 14 in the Morganville Vampire series, which will be expected around May next year.  And just so you all know, there is a book 15.  Yay!!

First Lines:  I'm running along the boardwalk, wind and sand stinging my arms.

Synopsis:It’s almost a year since Gaby Winters was in the car crash that killed her twin brother, Jude. Her body has healed in the sunshine of Pandanus Beach, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn’t help that every night in her dreams she kills demons and other hell-spawn.
And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who’s been appearing in Gaby’s dreams—he claims a history with her brother that makes no sense. Gaby is forced to accept that what she thought she knew about herself and her life is only a shadow of the truth—and that the truth is more likely to be
found in the shadows of her nightmares.
Who is Rafa? Who are the Rephaim? And most importantly, who can she trust?

My Thoughts:
Shadows is the first book in The Rephaim series.  A few things stood out the most for me.  I'm loving that the characters are all on the high end scale of YA. Think 18/19 years old or so.

I'm happy to say I'm finally coming across some more Australian YA Authors work and I'm loving it.  It's strange but awesome having paranormal activity happening right here.  I think I felt closer to the story and Gaby than I have with some characters in YA and the fact that I could relate to alot of the dialogue and actions made her as a character come alive.

Rafa was an interesting one though.  At first I'm unsure if he's there to help or hinder with Gaby and the further I read, the better I was at working him out.  I'm definitely hoping he'll be sticking around and making himself more known in future books :)

There are quite a few questions left hanging after finishing the book.  I'd love to let you all know what these questions are but I don't want to spoil it for others.  The one thing I can say is I'm looking forward to more encounters with hellions and demons.  Ez and Zak were instant favourites of mine too.

I found Shadows to be a very promising start to what I hope will be an awesome series, and from what I've read we are looking at roughly 3 or 4 books to the series so far.  Thanks to Paula Weston's website.  Can't wait for Haze the second book in The Rephaim series to be available.
